Good morning guys, Evan here with EZ Custom Ag for the final edition of AgriGold’s Field GX. You’ll see behind me we’re going to be talking about Family J. Exciting for everybody north of us.
Most of these hybrids are not going to fit our geography here in southern Ohio. Much shorter season family, but from what I’ve been told great family to work wit. It’s going to have a lot of yield potential for guys that it fits their maturity range. So let’s jump right into it.
So, this one’s a little bit different. Most of the time we either have kernel flex or we’re changing the size of that ear. With Family J we’re looking at length and depth, so that adds a little bit of a dynamic to where our grain fill period goes kind of from short to medium. It’s on the lower end of that medium spectrum really. You’re still trying to get those kernels filled as much as you can but a lot of your yields are going to come from your length.
I’ve been told we’re talking like 14 around is as big as these things you’re going to get, but you’re going to get them 50 long. They’re going to be kind of a different ear style than what we’re used to at AgriGold, but still packing just as many kernels on there, and we’re still putting the weight in those kernels; 55 to 57 not as high as some of the other hybrids, but still above average in the industry. So, it’s going to be a different looking ear, but we’re going to get a lot of weight and a lot of yield from it.
This particular hybrid can go anywhere except for south. We’re not going to be bringing you know a hundred day corn down south of 70. So, it’s not going to fit a lot of the geography around here. I don’t have any specific experience with any of the hybrids themselves, but talking to my friends that are up towards Lake Erie going around into Michigan and up in that direction this family fits their acre very well and they’re all very excited about it.
We’re still going to split application nitrogen rather than front loading all of it. We’re trying to hit the v10 time frame just over waist high, and then a little bit later in the season to get those kernels filled. So, we want to make sure that plant has plenty of gas to get it through to the finish.
This hybrid has above average wet foot tolerance just like a Family H does, but like I said just like a Family H you can go about anywhere. So, you’ve got fields that are partially tiled or fields that tend to lay wet or longer in the season got that dark black mucky ground. This is going to be a good family to throw on there. They can perform well.
Also, one that we’re probably going to want to put foliar fungicide on depending on our disease pressure. It has a little bit of trouble with northern and gray leaf spot, so we want to make sure that it’s protected from those as we get later on into the season, but this hybrid has a standard that is above average stock strength, so it’s going to be one that you’re going to be able to let stand until you know late November if you need to because it’s built that stock for you, and it’s going to hold that ear later on into the season.
So, guys I appreciate you watching. This is going to conclude our series on Field GX from AgriGold, and I’m happy to say next time we’ll see you out in the field.
