Crop Removal Calculator | Nutrient Removal by Yield

EZ Custom Ag Farm Tools

Crop Removal Calculator

Estimate the nutrients removed from a field when a crop is harvested. Select the crop, enter expected or actual yield and acres, then calculate primary nutrients, secondary nutrients and available micronutrient removal estimates per acre.

Important: Crop removal is an estimate, not a fertilizer recommendation. The replacement-value section uses the fertilizer products and prices you select, credits N/P₂O₅/K₂O/S supplied by multi-nutrient products, and finds a least-cost combination that meets the calculated removal targets. Product analyses are standard guaranteed analyses; verify your supplier label. Nitrogen removal does not automatically mean fertilizer N should be applied, especially for legumes. Micronutrient removal varies by genetics, environment, soil and tissue concentration, so use soil and tissue testing for fertilizer decisions.

How Crop Nutrient Removal Affects Fertility Planning

Every harvested crop carries nutrients away from the field. Understanding crop removal can help you evaluate long-term phosphorus, potassium and sulfur needs and compare nutrient replacement strategies. Removal is only one part of fertility planning, so soil-test levels, nutrient availability, crop rotation, yield history and field conditions should also be considered.

Crop Removal Calculator for Corn, Soybeans, Wheat and More

Nutrient removal changes by crop and yield. Higher-yielding crops generally remove more nutrients, which can increase the amount of fertility needed to maintain soil-test levels. Use the calculator to compare crops and yield scenarios before making a fertilizer decision.

Crop Removal Is Not the Same as Fertilizer Recommendation

Crop removal estimates what leaves the field in harvested grain or forage. A fertilizer recommendation may be higher, lower or even zero depending on soil-test values, nutrient credits, expected yield, soil characteristics and management goals. Use removal values as one useful piece of the fertility picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is crop nutrient removal?

Crop nutrient removal is the amount of nutrient exported from a field in harvested grain or forage.

Does higher yield increase nutrient removal?

Usually, yes. As more grain or forage is harvested, more nutrients are removed from the field.

Should I replace every pound removed?

Not automatically. Soil-test levels, nutrient availability, crop rotation and local recommendations should be considered before making a fertilizer application.
